We regularly interview, feature and promote Pollinators members. This time we’re learning more about Shane Foreman.
How many social entrepreneurs does it take to change a light globe?
Just one, his name is Shane Foreman and he wants to change every light globe.
Shane is a husband, father, a school teacher of 17 years and a Pollinators member. Teaching has recently taken a back seat to his new enterprise Lighting-up Energy Down Australia.
As the name suggests LED Australia distributes domestic, commercial and industrial LED lighting inAustralia.
Shane says LED’s or Light Emitting Diodes are small rods of glass or ceramic that glow brightly when you put a small amount of electric current into them.
“We work roughly on a rule of times by ten. So a ten watt LED gives the same amount of light as a 100 watt incandescent globe” he said.
They use from 50 to 90 per cent less electricity than conventional incandescent light globes, contain no chemicals or gasses like fluorescent globes and tubes and they last a long time, a really long time. Imagine only having to change your light globes every seven to ten years.
Installing the globes requires no special electrical work, when replacing conventional Bayonet or Edison fittings, while florescent tube fittings require a little retro fitting to achieve energy savings.
Shane aims to make environmentally safer products more affordable.
“To me it seems as soon as you want to go green you have to pay, we want to be able to go green and keep the cost as minimal“, he said.
Shane is currently working with the Shire of Northampton on a project to light the Pioneer Park and the Horrocks Beach Jetty.
“Street lighting is my passion. We have excellent products for street lighting that are virtually vandal proof, have an average energy saving of around thirty five percent, are low maintenance and long life, and if you lose one LED there are still many others in the fitting to keep producing light“.
